The sonata uses borrowings, including self-citations. At one point he uses one of the oboe themes of the "letter song" … Even rarer are the Trio for piano, oboe, and bassoon and the Oboe Sonata, both of which show a somewhat more experimental version of Poulenc's basic language; oboist John Roberts is especially affecting in the sonata's unusual final "Déploration" slow movement. His Sonata for Oboe and Piano, written in memory of Sergei Prokofiev, and is Poulenc’s last work of any stature, alters the succession of movements in his earlier wind sonatas to slow-fast-slow, ending with a ‘Deploration’ which the composer described as “a sort of liturgical chant”.
